Chapter 23 - We did not reunite immediately

Luke stayed out for another four months.

Eleven months total.

During that time, we co-parented.

Ella learned to crawl.

Then walk.

Luke missed none of it.

He came.

Sat on the floor.

Played.

Left when we agreed.

No pressure on me.

No:

I’ve done therapy, come on.

No using Ella to negotiate marriage.

That mattered.

Margaret’s house remained off-limits.

Luke did not send photographs without asking me.

Did not secretly arrange FaceTime.

Did not say:

She’s still her grandmother.

He had finally learned that relationships did not create automatic access.

When Margaret completed the custodial portion of her sentence, Luke visited her alone.

He told me before.

Not permission.

Information.

I said:

“Okay.”

He went.

Came back.

“What happened?”

“She asked about Ella.”

“What did you say?”

“That she’s healthy.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

Good.

Eventually, Luke moved home.

We did not frame it as:

Everything is fixed.

May you like

It was a new attempt.

Under new rules.
