Chapter 20 - Luke was not charged

Some relatives wanted Luke arrested.

I understood emotionally.

Legally, evidence did not support that result.

He had not administered the drug.

Had not purchased it.

Had not told Margaret to do it.

There was no evidence he knew she would medicate Ella on the emergency day.

He suspected prior use.

He failed to warn me.

That could be morally devastating without fitting a provable criminal offense under the facts.

Child protective services documented his failure.

Our family safety plan required clear boundaries with Margaret.

Luke could not facilitate prohibited contact.

He complied.

The police report described him as:

A material witness with prior knowledge of concerning conduct.

That label embarrassed him.

Good.

Not because embarrassment is justice.

Because he had spent months trying to avoid exactly that.

Family embarrassment.

Conflict.

Being caught between wife and mother.

Avoidance eventually produced a public file.
