Chapter 14 - The second prior episode

Three weeks later, Luke took Ella to Margaret’s house for four hours while I worked.

I remember being annoyed.

I had wanted our regular sitter.

Luke said:

“Mom wants time with her.”

When Ella came home, she barely ate.

Slept from six until midnight.

Then woke irritable.

I called the pediatrician’s after-hours line.

They asked:

Fever?

No.

Vomiting?

No.

Breathing okay?

Yes.

Wet diapers?

Yes.

They advised monitoring.

By morning she was normal.

I did not mention possible medication.

I did not know.

Luke did.

Not the fact.

The possibility.

That haunted me.

Phone records later showed Margaret called him that afternoon.

Twenty-three minutes.

No recording.

Luke described the conversation during a later interview.

“She said Ella was fighting her nap.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her not to force it.”

“And?”

“She said, ‘I handled it.’”

“What did that mean to you?”

Luke hesitated.

“I was afraid it meant the medicine.”

“Did you ask?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“She said, ‘Stop interrogating me.’”

“Did you tell Sarah?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Luke started crying.

“Because I knew Sarah would stop letting Mom babysit.”

There.

That was the real answer.

Not:

I wanted to protect Sarah from worry.

He wanted to preserve family peace.

At our daughter’s expense.
