Chapter 9 - Margaret’s explanation

Margaret finally gave a formal interview through counsel.
She admitted giving Ella:
“A small amount of an over-the-counter product.”
Not the first day she was questioned.
Only after the purchase records and Luke’s texts.
Her explanation:
She believed the product was safe because similar medicines had been used in her family decades earlier.
She said she used:
“Barely any.”
No one let the exact quantity become public because it added little and could encourage dangerous imitation.
Why give it?
“To help her settle.”
How many times?
“Once.”
Investigators already suspected more.
Which day?
The wedding.
Not the emergency.
Margaret denied giving anything on Wednesday.
Then why did Ella test positive?
“Sarah must have.”
Back to me.
Detective Perez said:
“Sarah was not with Ella during the medically likely exposure window.”
Margaret answered:
“Doctors guess.”
Her attorney interrupted.
