Chapter 8 - Luke’s text

The stronger evidence was on Luke’s phone.

He volunteered it.

I did not know what he would find.

Neither did he, apparently.

Search:

Mom.

Sleep.

Ella.

Then a text from four weeks earlier.

Margaret:

She finally gave up fighting sleep.

Luke:

What did you do?

Margaret:

What mothers used before the internet convinced everyone babies are made of glass.

Luke:

Mom seriously what did you give her

Margaret:

Relax. Something mild.

Luke:

Sarah will lose it if you give Ella medicine without asking

Margaret:

Then don’t tell Sarah and there won’t be a problem.

I read the message once.

Then again.

Looked at Luke.

“What did you do after this?”

He looked ill.

“I called her.”

“And?”

“She said she was talking about teething drops.”

“Did you believe her?”

“I wanted to.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He sat down.

“No.”

There.

“Did you tell me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“You were already barely sleeping.”

I laughed.

Bitter.

“So you protected me from information about what someone might be putting into our baby.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew enough to ask.”

“I know.”

“No. Stop saying that.”

He flinched.

I handed the phone back to Detective Perez.

My husband had not given Ella the medication.

I believed that.

But he had stood at the edge of a warning and turned away because he did not want another fight between his mother and his wife.

That failure would become the center of our marriage long after Margaret’s case ended.
