Chapter 25 - Margaret sees Ella again

Not for almost three years.

That was my decision.

Then partly Ella’s.

By the time Margaret became legally eligible for broader family contact, Ella was nearly three and a half.

She did not remember the hospital.

She knew Margaret only through photographs and vague family references.

Luke never asked me to force contact.

Margaret never contacted us directly.

Then a supervised family therapist proposed that if we ever wanted a relationship, the first meeting should be short, neutral, and entirely child-led.

I said no.

Three months later:

Maybe.

Then:

Yes.

Not because Margaret had earned a grandmother prize.

Because I wanted to know whether boundaries could exist without fear.

We met in a therapist’s playroom.

Margaret looked older.

No elegant armor.

Simple cardigan.

Ella hid behind my leg.

Margaret did not approach.

Good.

She said:

“Hi, Ella.”

Ella stared.

Then returned to blocks.

Margaret sat across the room.

Twenty minutes.

No hug.

No gift.

No:

Come to Grandma.

At the end, Ella waved.

Margaret cried only after we left.

The therapist told me later.

May you like

Good.

Her emotions were hers to carry.
