Chapter 15 - Luke moves out

I asked Luke to leave.

Not because I thought he poisoned Ella.

I did not.

Because I could not sleep beside someone who had withheld a warning about our baby.

He moved into an extended-stay apartment five miles away.

No screaming.

No police.

No dramatic suitcase thrown onto lawn.

He packed.

Kissed Ella.

Cried.

Then looked at me.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

That was the problem.

Love existed.

Trust did not.

He asked:

“Can I come tomorrow?”

“For Ella, yes.”

“For you?”

“I don’t know.”

He nodded.

For the next six months, Luke visited almost daily.

Initially I remained present because child services wanted clarity while the investigation developed.

Eventually there was no safety concern about Luke caring for Ella alone.

No evidence he administered anything.

No evidence he encouraged Margaret to medicate her.

His failure was concealment.

Serious.

Different.

He began individual therapy.

Not as a magic sentence reducer.

He had no criminal charge.

Because I required change if marriage had any future.
