Chapter 24 - Ella’s follow-up

Ella recovered fully.
That was the medical outcome I cared about more than every legal one.
No chronic respiratory problem.
No neurological injury attributable to the event.
Development remained on track.
At fourteen months:
Walking.
At eighteen:
Enough words to make silence impossible.
At two:
Opinion about everything.
Pediatric follow-up included developmental surveillance because severe sedation in an infant is frightening even when no permanent injury is obvious.
Normal.
Normal.
Normal.
I loved that word.
At first, every long nap terrified me.
I would touch Ella’s chest.
Check breathing.
Once I woke her because she slept three hours.
She screamed for twenty minutes.
My pediatrician said:
“Sarah, eventually she is allowed to sleep.”
I knew.
My body did not.
Therapy helped.
Time helped.
Ella becoming a loud toddler helped most.
No one could confuse her with overly sedated when she was shouting:
May you like
“No pants!”
at seven in the morning.
