Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF HOME

The silence inside the sleek, modern kitchen was louder than a gunshot.

Ryan Whitmore stood frozen near the front door, his duffel bag slipping from his hand.

The floor was cold tile, but the air inside felt like a furnace.

His eyes locked onto the nightmare unfolding on the pristine white marble.

His wife, Sarah, was crumpled against the lower cabinets.

Her blonde hair was matted with sweat and tears.

A deep, purple bruise bloomed across her cheekbone like a fresh stain.

Beside her, four-year-old Leo was sobbing uncontrollably.

The boy’s small chest heaved with frantic breaths as he clung to his mother’s torn sweater.

Scattered across the floor between them were bright orange prescription bottles.

Dozens of tiny white pills were strewn across the polished floor like fallen teeth.

Standing over them was Evelyn, Ryan’s mother-in-law.

Evelyn was dressed in a sharp, immaculate black suit, her grey hair pulled into an elegant, unyielding bun.

Her face held no remorse, only cold, calculated satisfaction.

"What did you just do?!" Ryan’s voice tore through the heavy air.

He stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

His mind reeled, trying to comprehend the scene of pure cruelty before him.

Evelyn turned slowly to face him, her expression shifting in a split second from malice to feigned authority.

"I did what had to be done, Ryan," Evelyn said, her voice smooth and devoid of warm human emotion.

"She is unfit," Evelyn added, pointing a manicured finger down at the sobbing woman on the tile.

"Look at her," Evelyn sneered, stepping on a pair of plastic prescription bottles.

"She is a junkie, Ryan," Evelyn declared coldly.

"She endangers your son every single day," Evelyn spat.

"You lie!" Sarah gasped through her tears, shielding little Leo with her arm.

"She took them from my safe!" Sarah cried out, her voice breaking with agony.

"She threw them on the floor to make it look like I relapsed!" Sarah sobbed.

"Silence!" Evelyn commanded, taking a step toward Sarah with her hand raised.

Something inside Ryan snapped.

Years of quiet endurance, years of swallowing his mother-in-law's passive-aggressive insults, evaporated in an instant.

He moved faster than he ever had in his life.

In one fluid motion, Ryan crossed the distance between them.

His arm lashed out.

A loud, thunderous crack echoed through the spacious kitchen.

Ryan’s palm struck Evelyn’s cheek with brutal, unrestrained force.

The momentum knocked the older woman off balance.

Evelyn stumbled backward and fell hard onto the cold tile floor.

Her flawless grey hair came undone, spilling wildly across her face.

She clutched her red, swollen cheek, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief.

"STAY AWAY FROM THEM!" Ryan roared.

His lungs burned as he yelled, his hands shaking violently with adrenaline.

"How dare you!" Evelyn gasped from the floor, her voice trembling with sudden fear.

"How dare you strike me in my own daughter's home!" Evelyn screeched.

Ryan leaned over the marble island, placing both hands flat on the counter.

He bent down until his face was inches away from hers.

His veins stood out on his neck, his eyes burning with intense, protective rage.

"Get your things and GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Ryan screamed.

Evelyn stared up at him, her mouth agape, unable to process the total loss of control.

Ryan reached down and grabbed her firmly by the jaw, forcing her to look directly into his terrifying eyes.

"Tell me what..." Ryan growled under his breath, his knuckles white.

"Tell me what you thought you were going to achieve today," Ryan whispered harshly.

"Because if you ever touch my wife or my son again," Ryan warned, "you won't live to regret it."

Evelyn gasped for air, struggling against his tight grip.

"You think you've won, Ryan?" Evelyn hissed, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom.

May you like

"You have no idea what I’ve already put in motion," Evelyn whispered with a terrible smirk.

Outside, the distant wail of police sirens began to echo down the quiet suburban street.
