Chapter 9 - THE CONFRONTATION AT KNIFEPOINT

Dr. Vance panicked, stumbling backward into a tray of surgical instruments.
The metal tray crashed to the floor, scattering scalpels and glass vials everywhere.
Evelyn recovered her shock quickly, her face twisting into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred.
She snatched a sharp stainless-steel scalpel off the floor and held it out toward Ryan's chest.
"Stay back, Ryan!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing in the small room.
"You are a fugitive!" Evelyn yelled.
"You step one foot closer, and I will slit her IV line and frame you for her murder!" Evelyn threatened insanely.
"Ryan...?" Sarah whimpered from the bed, her blurry eyes trying to focus on her husband.
"I'm here, baby," Ryan said softly, his voice trembling as he raised his hands slowly.
"I'm right here," Ryan reassured her.
Ryan took a slow, deliberate step forward, keeping his eyes locked onto Evelyn's wild gaze.
"You've lost, Evelyn," Ryan said calmly, holding up the black briefcase.
"I have your financial records," Ryan revealed.
"I have the offshore transfer accounts, the bribe receipts, and Marcus's testimony," Ryan added.
Evelyn’s eyes widened in sudden, genuine panic at the mention of that name.
"Marcus...?" Evelyn gasped, her hand shaking slightly as she held the scalpel.
"Marcus is dead!" Evelyn screamed.
"He's very much alive, Evelyn," a stern voice spoke from the doorway.
Marcus walked into the room, holding a heavy police radio he had taken from the guards downstairs.
His scarred face was illuminated by the harsh overhead lights.
Evelyn backed away until her spine hit the heavy glass window overlooking the storm-drenched city.
"You..." Evelyn whispered, horror completely overtaking her face.
"You ruined my life ten years ago, Evelyn," Marcus said coldly, stepping into the room.
"Tonight, the check comes due," Marcus said.
Evelyn looked wildly between Ryan and Marcus, realizing she was completely cornered.
Suddenly, the loud, whirring sound of helicopter blades roared overhead outside the window.
A bright spotlight cut through the heavy rain, shining directly into Room 408.
Searchlights illuminated the entire room in a blinding white glare.
Evelyn let out a bitter, psychotic laugh as she looked out at the chopper.
"That's my private transport," Evelyn sneered, her confidence suddenly returning.
"You think you've cornered me?" Evelyn mocked.
"This whole facility is surrounded by my men," Evelyn boasted.

Before anyone could react, Evelyn lunged sideways and hit the emergency lock button on the wall.
Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the door and windows, sealing them inside the room.
