Chapter 4 - THE ESCAPE PROTOCOL

Ryan stared at the silver key hanging around Marcus's neck.

"How does a key help us get past two dozen armed cops?" Ryan asked, his tone filled with desperate skepticism.

"This key doesn't open this door," Marcus replied, standing up slowly.

"It opens a maintenance hatch behind the pipe shaft in the corner bench," Marcus explained.

Marcus walked over to the rusted metal bench attached to the concrete wall.

He reached underneath and pulled off a loose iron panel, revealing a narrow, dark crawlspace.

"I built these holding cells thirty years ago as a city contractor," Marcus said with a dry laugh.

"Evelyn didn't know that when she had her dirty cops throw me in here," Marcus added.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the hallway outside.

Heavy boot heels clicked against the linoleum floor.

A tall guard with a thick moustache appeared outside the cell bars, holding a metal tray of cold food.

"Quiet in there, Whitmore," the guard growled, sliding the tray through the bottom slot.

"You've got a high-profile visitor in ten minutes," the guard added with a cruel smirk.

"Who?" Ryan demanded, stepping toward the bars.

"Mrs. Evelyn Vance herself," the guard replied warmly.

"She wants to offer you a settlement deal before you get transferred to the county jail," the guard chuckled.

The guard turned and walked away down the corridor, his keys jingling.

Ryan looked over at Marcus, his mind making a rapid calculation.

"If she comes down here, she brings the transfer papers," Ryan realized.

"She wants you to sign over your parental rights in exchange for dropping the assault charges," Marcus agreed.

"We don't run yet," Ryan decided, his voice growing cold and resolute.

"What are you planning, kid?" Marcus asked, frowning.

"We let her come in," Ryan said, turning toward the shadowy entrance.

"We make her feel like she has total control," Ryan added.

"And then I take something from her that she can't replace," Ryan declared.

Ten minutes passed like an eternity.

The heavy door at the end of the hall creaked open again.

Evelyn walked down the narrow corridor, her expensive heels clicking rhythmically.

She was flanked by two armed security guards wearing private contractor uniforms, not city police.

She stopped right outside Ryan's cell, a triumphant look in her dark eyes.

"Look at you, Ryan," Evelyn scoffed, looking at his rumpled clothes and bruised hands.

"Standing in a cage, exactly where a street rat belongs," Evelyn sneered.

She motioned to one of her private guards.

The guard pulled out a leather briefcase, unlocked it, and produced a stack of legal documents and a sleek pen.

"Sign these documents," Evelyn ordered through the iron bars.

"Relinquish all custody rights to Leo," Evelyn instructed.

"Agree to a complete divorce decree on grounds of severe domestic abuse," Evelyn added cold-heartedly.

"And what do I get in return?" Ryan asked, stepping up to the bars, acting defeated.

"I drop the aggravated assault charges," Evelyn offered generously.

"You spend six months in prison for minor trespass instead of twenty years for attempted murder," Evelyn bargained.

Ryan reached his hand slowly through the bars toward the documents.

Evelyn smiled, stepping closer to hand him the pen.

"You're a sensible boy after all, Ryan," Evelyn cooed softly.

The moment her hand came within reach, Ryan’s arm shot through the bars like a steel trap.

He grabbed Evelyn by her collar, slamming her body hard against the iron steel bars.

Evelyn gasped in terror as her breath was violently knocked out of her.

Before the guards could draw their weapons, Ryan grabbed the master keycard hanging from her designer purse strap.

"Marcus, NOW!" Ryan yelled.
