Chapter 15 - THE RUNAWAY TANK

The windshield wipers beat frantically against the blinding torrents of rain.
Ryan drove like a man possessed, weaving through midnight traffic at extreme speeds.
The digital clock on the dashboard read 11:42 PM.
He had eighteen minutes before the private jet departed.
He glanced at the passenger seat where Evelyn's briefcase lay open.
Among the stolen documents was a hand-drawn map of the private airfield layout and its security codes.
Suddenly, a massive black SUV pulled out from a side street, smashing violently into the side of Ryan's truck.
Metal ground against metal, sending bright showers of sparks flying into the rain.
Ryan fought the steering wheel as his truck skidded sideways across three lanes of traffic.
He looked over to see two armed men inside the black SUV, pointing automatic pistols straight through their passenger window.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Bullets shattered Ryan's side mirror and tore through the metal door frame.
Ryan slammed on the brakes, letting the heavy SUV overshoot his position.
He whipped the steering wheel violently to the right and stomped on the gas pedal.
The heavy steel ram-bar on the front of Ryan's truck slammed straight into the SUV's rear quarter panel.
The SUV spun out of control, flipping over twice before crashing into a concrete highway divider in a massive fireball.
Ryan didn't even slow down to look back.
He sped through the shattered gates of the industrial port district, the roaring engines of distant airplanes growing louder in his ears.
Ahead, across the wide, rain-slicked runway, a private white gulstream jet was slowly taxiing toward the main takeoff strip.
Inside the rear passenger window of the jet, Ryan caught a brief glimpse of a small, terrified child looking out into the dark storm.

"LEO!" Ryan screamed inside the cabin.
He turned the truck directly onto the active runway, aiming straight for the moving airplane's landing gear.
