Chapter 2 - THE AMBUSH

The sirens grew louder with every passing second.

Red and blue light flashed rhythmically through the tall kitchen windows.

Evelyn’s terrifying smirk widened as she listened to the approaching emergency vehicles.

"You called them," Ryan realized, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"Of course I did, darling," Evelyn replied, her tone dripping with venomous fake warmth.

"A domestic violence report," Evelyn sneered softly, dusting off her black suit jacket as Ryan let go of her jaw.

"A frantic call from a concerned grandmother reporting an abusive, unstable husband and an addicted mother," Evelyn added.

"You're insane!" Sarah screamed from the floor, clutching Leo tighter to her chest.

"They will see the truth!" Sarah cried out.

"Will they?" Evelyn asked smoothly, standing up and straightening her posture.

"Who do you think the police will believe?" Evelyn mocked.

"A distinguished matriarch with a bruised face, or a disgraced ex-convict and a woman with a history of depression?" Evelyn whispered.

Ryan felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach.

Five years ago, Ryan had served two years in prison for a crime he didn't commit—taking the blame for a business deal gone wrong to protect his family.

Evelyn had engineered that past setup, and now she was using it as a weapon once again.

The front door burst open with a heavy thud.

Three armed police officers rushed into the foyer, their hands resting on their holstered weapons.

"Police! Nobody move!" the lead officer shouted.

The officers scanned the room rapidly, taking in the chaotic scene.

They saw the scattered white pills on the floor.

They saw Sarah, bruised and weeping on the ground with a terrified child.

And they saw Evelyn, holding her red, swollen cheek, pointing a trembling finger straight at Ryan.

"Officer! Thank God you're here!" Evelyn wailed, instantly transforming into a helpless victim.

"He attacked me!" Evelyn sobbed dramatically, forcing real tears to spill over her eyelids.

"He came home in a rage and struck me when I tried to protect my grandson from their drug abuse!" Evelyn cried.

"That's a lie!" Ryan yelled, raising his hands slowly into the air.

"Officer, look at my wife!" Ryan pleaded.

"My mother-in-law assaulted Sarah and staged those pills!" Ryan explained urgently.

"Sir, keep your hands where we can see them and step away from the kitchen island!" the officer commanded harshly.

The second officer moved quickly behind Ryan, pulling his arms forcefully behind his back.

Metal handcuffs clinked softly before snapping tightly around Ryan's wrists.

"Ryan! No!" Sarah shrieked, trying to stand up, but her knees gave out from pain and exhaustion.

"Mommy! Daddy!" little Leo screamed, sobbing hysterically as the third officer moved between Sarah and the child.

"Ma'am, stay down," the third officer said to Sarah sternly.

"Child Protective Services is already on their way," the officer added cold-heartedly.

Ryan’s eyes widened in sheer horror.

"CPS?!" Ryan screamed, struggling against the cuffs.

"You can't take my son!" Ryan bellowed.

Evelyn walked slowly past the police officers, standing beside the doorway.

She adjusted her coat and leaned in slightly toward Ryan as he was being escorted out.

"I told you, Ryan," Evelyn whispered so softly that only he could hear.

"I own this family," Evelyn said.

"And by tomorrow morning, you will have nothing left," Evelyn promised with a cold grin.
