Chapter 3 - DARK CELL, DARKER TRUTHS

The heavy iron door of the holding cell slammed shut with a deafening metallic clang.

Ryan stood alone in the dim, damp interrogation holding area of the precinct.

The harsh fluorescent light above flickered endlessly, casting long, jagged shadows across the concrete walls.

Ryan paced the small room like a caged panther.

His mind was racing at a dangerous speed.

He could still hear Leo’s frantic screams echoing in his ears.

He could still see the dark purple bruise on Sarah’s cheek.

He slammed his right fist against the solid brick wall, unheeding of the pain blooming in his knuckles.

"Furious wall-punching won't get you out of here, kid," a deep, raspy voice sounded from the darkness.

Ryan spun around quickly, his muscles tensing for another fight.

Sitting on a low bench in the shadowed corner was an older man.

The man looked to be in his late 50s, wearing a tattered denim jacket over a faded flannel shirt.

His face was weathered, covered in grey stubble, and his left eye was obscured by a thick, jagged scar.

"Who are you?" Ryan demanded, keeping his distance.

"Name's Marcus," the old man replied calmly, leaning back against the wall.

"And I know exactly why you're here, Ryan Whitmore," Marcus added with a faint, mysterious smile.

Ryan froze, his heart dropping into his stomach.

"How do you know my name?" Ryan asked defensively.

"Because your mother-in-law, Evelyn Vance, pays good money to keep people like me quiet," Marcus revealed, his voice dropping an octave.

Ryan took a step closer, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.

"What are you talking about?" Ryan pressed.

"Evelyn isn't just a bitter, wealthy socialite," Marcus began, pulling a crumpled cigarette from his pocket without lighting it.

"She’s the head of a silent syndicate that liquidates high-value family estates by ruining the heirs," Marcus explained.

"What?" Ryan asked, stunned.

"Ten years ago, she did it to her first husband," Marcus said.

"Five years ago, she framed a young rising corporate star—you—to isolate Sarah and gain control of the Whitmore trust fund," Marcus revealed.

Ryan felt the breath leave his lungs.

"The trust fund..." Ryan whispered.

"Sarah's father left her a $50 million inheritance that unlocks on Leo's fifth birthday," Ryan recalled.

"Which is in exactly two weeks," Marcus pointed out sharpely.

"If Sarah is declared an unfit mother, and you are convicted of a felony assault," Marcus continued, "Evelyn assumes full legal guardianship of Leo."

"And full control over the fifty million dollars," Marcus concluded.

Ryan gripped the iron bars of the cell door, his knuckles turning pure white.

The entire horrifying puzzle suddenly clicked into place.

The staged pills, the unexpected visit, the intentional provocation—it was all a master plan to execute a massive financial heist.

"Why are you telling me this?" Ryan asked, turning back to Marcus.

"Because Evelyn thought I died in prison three years ago after she betrayed me," Marcus said, his scarred face hardening with bitter vengeance.

"I have the proof you need to destroy her," Marcus added, pulling a small silver key from under his collar.

"But we have to break out of this cell before midnight," Marcus said.

May you like

"Why midnight?" Ryan asked frantically.

"Because at midnight, Evelyn’s corrupt judge signs the paper to permanently remove Leo from your custody," Marcus revealed.
