Chapter 6 - THE PIPES OF WRATH

The cold water in the underground drainage pipes reached up to Ryan's knees.

The stench of stagnant water and rust filled the damp air.

Above them, the heavy metallic thuds against the iron door slowly faded away.

"They're going to cover the street exits," Marcus warned, his voice echoing softly against the concrete walls.

"We can't use the main manholes," Ryan said, checking the glowing tracker screen.

The red dot representing Evelyn was moving rapidly north toward the city's private medical district.

"There's an old storm outlet near the abandoned industrial rail line," Marcus said, pointing down the dark tunnel.

"It empties out three blocks from Saint Jude Private Hospital," Marcus added.

"That's where she's taking Sarah," Ryan said, his jaw clenching with fierce determination.

They moved quickly through the wet, subterranean labyrinth.

Every shadow seemed to stretch and twist in the faint beam of Marcus's pocket flashlight.

Ryan’s mind reeled with terrible visions of what Sarah was enduring.

He knew his wife was fragile, but he also knew her immense love for their son.

Evelyn was going to break her spirit using every dirty drug and legal loophole available.

"How long have you been tracking Evelyn?" Ryan asked, his boots splashing in the dirty water.

"Three long years, Ryan," Marcus replied without slowing his pace.

"She took my daughter's life using the exact same scheme," Marcus revealed, a bitter edge in his voice.

"She drove her to suicide with fake medical reports and stolen custody," Marcus added grimly.

Ryan felt a wave of cold fury wash over him.

This was not just a greedy mother-in-law; Evelyn was a cold, calculating monster.

"We aren't just saving Sarah tonight, Marcus," Ryan said firmly.

"We are putting Evelyn behind bars forever," Ryan promised.

"First, we survive the night, kid," Marcus replied, stopping at a vertical rusty ladder.

Above them, faint moonlight peeked through an iron grating.

Marcus climbed up carefully, peering through the steel bars to check the street above.

"It's clear," Marcus whispered, signaling Ryan to follow.

"But we have less than forty minutes before that offshore transport transfer goes through."
