Chapter 18 - THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE

Ryan stepped out of the emergency hatch carrying Leo, stepping down onto the wet tarmac under the glaring spotlights.
Dozens of officers had their weapons trained on the aircraft, but as soon as they saw the trembling boy in Ryan's arms, the tactical leader shouted for them to hold fire.
A high-ranking federal agent stepped forward, holding up a badge through the heavy rain.
"Ryan Whitmore! Stand down!" the agent called out through a megaphone.
"I'm not armed! My son is safe!" Ryan yelled back, walking steadily toward the line of police cruisers.
Marcus stepped out from behind a state police vehicle, accompanied by two federal prosecutors holding thick stacks of evidence folders.
"It's over, Ryan," Marcus called out with a warm, relieved smile.
"We uploaded all of Evelyn’s private server files directly to the Department of Justice ten minutes ago," Marcus explained.
"Jax’s team secured the antidote, and Sarah is fully conscious and stabilized at the central hospital," Marcus added.
Ryan felt a wave of overwhelming relief crash over him, nearly taking his legs out from under him.
Two officers gently helped Ryan down, wrapping a warm shock blanket around little Leo's shoulders.
At that exact moment, a black unmarked sedan arrived, and two federal agents pulled a handcuffed Evelyn out of the back seat.
Her expensive suit was soaked with rain, her hair completely matted, and her face twisted in utter defeat.
She looked at Ryan, her eyes burning with a desperate, pathetic rage.
"You ruined everything!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice cracking over the sound of the wind and rain.
"I built that empire! You are nothing!" Evelyn screamed hysterically as officers forced her toward a transport van.
Ryan walked up to her slowly, holding Leo securely in his right arm.
He looked down at his mother-in-law without a single drop of fear or anger left in his chest—only complete pity.

"You built an empire on lies and cruelty, Evelyn," Ryan said softly, his voice firm and steady.
"And tonight, it all burned to the ground," Ryan concluded.
