Chapter 7 - SHADOWS OF SAINT JUDE

The rain began to fall in heavy, icy sheets as Ryan and Marcus climbed out of the storm drain.
They ducked into a dark alleyway across from the towering glass building of Saint Jude Private Hospital.
The building looked more like a luxury corporate fortress than a place of healing.
Armed private security guards in dark raincoats patrolled the perimeter with flashlights.
"Her private security company handles the hospital's night shifts," Ryan observed, watching two guards pass the main entrance.
"She owns the head of security here," Marcus added, pulling a small electronic jammer from his pocket.
"This will short out the security cameras on the rear loading dock for ninety seconds," Marcus explained.
"Ninety seconds is all I need," Ryan said, fixing his gaze on the service entrance.
They darted across the rain-slicked asphalt, keeping low behind parked ambulances.
Marcus pressed the button on the jammer.
The small red light on the ceiling-mounted camera above the loading dock flickered and went dark.
Ryan swiped Evelyn’s stolen keycard against the electronic lock on the service door.
The heavy door gave a soft hydraulic hiss and unlatched.
They slipped inside into a dimly lit, sterile hallway lined with metal supply carts.
The smell of bleach and antiseptic made Ryan's stomach turn.
"Floor four," Ryan whispered, consulting the electronic transfer form in Evelyn's briefcase.
"Room 408 is the isolation ward," Ryan noted.
"I'll head to the basement control room and loop the floor cameras," Marcus offered.
"Give me three minutes before you crash that room," Marcus instructed.
"Don't take too long, Marcus," Ryan said, gripping the edge of the briefcase.
"If she signs those papers, Sarah loses everything," Ryan said.
Ryan took the service stairs, taking three steps at a time in near silence.
His chest burned, and his muscles ached, but the thought of his wife kept him moving forward.

He reached the fourth floor and peeked through the small glass window of the heavy exit door.
Two large security guards were standing right outside Room 408.
