Chapter 10 - TRAPPED IN THE DARK

The room was plunged into near-total darkness as the steel shutters sealed off all outside light.
Only the faint, red emergency backup light cast a bloody glow over the trapped group.
The heavy air became thick and suffocating.
"What did you do?!" Ryan demanded, rushing toward the sealed steel door.
He slammed his hands against the thick metal, but it was completely solid and unyielding.
"This is an isolation lockdown, Ryan," Evelyn laughed quietly from the dark corner.
"Once activated, these doors do not open for two hours without a master key code," Evelyn explained.
"And only I have the master code," Evelyn added, tapping her temple with a manicured finger.
Sarah groaned in pain as the heavy sedative continued to flood her system.
"Ryan... my head..." Sarah gasped softly, her breathing becoming dangerously shallow.
Ryan rushed to his wife's side, ignoring Evelyn completely.
"We need to stop the IV!" Ryan said frantically, examining the electronic pump on the wall.
The pump was locked behind a digital touch screen, flashing an error signal due to the lockdown.
"Dr. Vance! Turn off this machine!" Marcus barked, grabbing the cowardly doctor by his collar.
"I... I can't!" Dr. Vance stammered, shaking in terror.
"The system is completely frozen by the lockdown protocol!" Dr. Vance whimpered.
"If that drug keeps pumping, her heart will stop in fifteen minutes!" Dr. Vance admitted.
Ryan felt a cold wave of panic hit his chest.
He looked at Evelyn, who was standing quietly near the far wall with a cold, triumphant smile.
"Give us the code, Evelyn!" Ryan bellowed, stepping toward her with lethal intent.
"Why should I?" Evelyn asked smoothly, folding her arms.
"In fifteen minutes, Sarah dies of an accidental drug overdose," Evelyn calculated aloud.
"You will be trapped in this room with her body and a dead guard outside," Evelyn continued.
"The police will find you here, holding the murder weapon," Evelyn sneered.
"And Leo will still belong to me," Evelyn whispered maliciously.
Ryan grabbed Evelyn by her shirt collar and slammed her hard against the steel shutter.
"Give me the code!" Ryan screamed, his veins bulging on his forehead.
Evelyn simply smiled into his face, her eyes filled with terrifying, unhinged victory.
"Kill me then, Ryan," Evelyn whispered softly.
"Kill me and watch your wife die right in front of your eyes," Evelyn dared him.

Ryan’s breathing was heavy, his heart pounding like a war drum in his ears.
He looked back at Sarah, whose eyes were slowly fluttering shut as her heart monitor began to beep erratically.
