Chapter 11: The Paranoia Protocol

The air inside the Maine cabin felt thick, heavy, and almost unbreathable. Daniel’s eyes remained glued to the glowing laptop screen, the cold blue light reflecting off his pale, sweat-sheened face. Paternal Match Status: 0.0%. The words burned into his retinas like acid, replaying in his mind with the agonizing rhythm of a death knell. He slowly turned his head to look across the dimly lit room.

Clara was still standing by the window, bathed in the soft amber glow of the dying hearth. She was gently rocking Alejandro, humming that low, sweet, familiar lullaby. To anyone else, it was a picture-perfect scene of maternal devotion. To Daniel, it now felt like a meticulously rehearsed horror movie. Was that gentle hand the same one that had held his in the hospital room while crying tears of relief? Was every single shared gaze, every trembling whisper of love, just a script written by a corporate syndicate?

"Daniel?" Clara’s soft voice broke the silence, cutting through his spiraling thoughts. She turned to face him, a warm, innocent smile playing on her lips. "You’ve been staring at that screen for hours, honey. Come to bed. We're finally safe now. The Mendozas can't touch us here."

Safe. The word tasted like ash in his mouth.

"Yeah," Daniel managed to choke out, forcing a weak smile as he slammed the laptop shut with a sharp snap. He quickly slipped the vibrating burner phone into his deeper coat pocket. "Just... checking the local weather radars. A massive winter storm is coming our way. I want to make sure the generator is ready."

He didn't sleep a single wink that night. He lay perfectly still beside her in the dark, listening to the synchronized, calm rhythm of her breathing. His right hand never left the grip of his Glock 19, hidden securely beneath his pillow. Every sound outside the cabin walls—the cracking of a frozen pine branch, the howling of the wind across the mountains—sounded like the tactical approach of a cleanup crew. But as he stared at the ceiling, Daniel realized the most terrifying truth of all: the real enemy wasn't outside in the freezing snow. It was sharing his blanket.

The next morning, the moment Clara stepped into the bathroom and the sound of a hot shower filled the cabin, Daniel sprang into action. His movements were silent, driven by pure survival adrenaline. He grabbed a sterile cotton swab from the emergency medical kit on the counter and walked over to the wooden crib.

"I’m sorry, buddy," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking as he looked down at the sleeping infant. With a shaking hand, he gently swabbed the inside of Alejandro’s cheek, sealing the biological sample inside a small plastic vial. He couldn't rely on the Aethelgard data alone. He needed his own independent test. He needed to know beyond a shadow of a doubt if the woman he loved had turned his own brother into her biological puppet.
