Chapter 4: The Ghost in the Vault

The corner office on the 50th floor of the Mendoza Tower smelled of cedar, expensive isolation, and old money. Daniel sat behind his father’s old mahogany desk, but he hadn’t touched a single luxury. The corporate restructuring was supposed to be his victory lap. He had put his brother behind bars, stripped his mother of her social status, and forced his tyrannical father into a bitter, silent retirement.

But power in the Mendoza family was like a hydra. You cut off one head, and two more grew in the dark.

"We’ve successfully transferred thirty percent of the voting shares to the employee-led trust, Mr. Mendoza," Sarah, his newly appointed Chief Legal Officer, said. She didn't sit down. She looked like she wanted to run out of the room. She slid a tablet across the dark wood. "But we hit a snag. A deep one. Our forensic accountants found an automated offshore wire. Every month, two million dollars bypasses our primary treasury and routes through a shell company in the Cayman Islands called The Phoenix Directive."

Daniel didn't look up from his screen. "Track the authorization. If my mother is buying her way out of house arrest, I want to know about it."

"It’s not your mother, Daniel," Sarah swallowed hard, her voice dropping to a whisper. "The digital signature belongs to someone listed as deceased twenty years ago. Your grandfather, Marcus Mendoza."

Daniel finally raised his eyes. The room felt suddenly cold. "Marcus has been in a crypt since I was twelve."

Before Sarah could answer, Daniel’s personal phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number. He picked it up, pressing it to his ear.

"You think you cut the head off the snake, Daniel?" a raspy, familiar voice whispered. It wasn't his grandfather. It was Esteban, his father, sounding broken but venomous from his heavily guarded estate. "I built an empire, son. You think I left the keys under the doormat? Check on your wife. The Mendoza family doesn't lose. We just change names."

"Esteban, if you come near Clara—"

May you like

"I don't need to come near her," the old man chuckled, a dry, coughing sound. "The trap was set before you even met her. Go look at the vault, Daniel. Look at what your grandfather left behind."

The line went dead. Daniel stared at the phone, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked at Sarah. "Get the security detail to my house. Now."
