Chapter 31: The Zurich Paradox

The crystal espresso cup shattered on the marble floor of the Swiss cafe, but Clara didn't hear it. Her eyes were pinned to the glowing terminal screen of her phone. Donor Clone Profile: Marcus Mendoza. Status: Returned.

The man she had thought was her grandfather—the man buried in a heavily guarded family crypt twenty years ago—had never truly left. He hadn't just created an empire; he had engineered a loophole in mortality itself. Alejandro wasn't a combination of her and Daniel. He was a perfect genetic vessel, a clean slate designed to carry the mind, the legacy, and the absolute power of the man who started it all.

"Your coffee is getting cold, Ms. Mendoza."

Clara snapped her head up. A waiter stood there, his face entirely forgettable, but his eyes were sharp, devoid of any genuine hospitality. He slipped a small, black encrypted earpiece onto her saucer beside the broken porcelain.

"He's waiting on line one," the waiter whispered, before turning and blending seamlessly into the morning crowd.

Clara’s fingers shook as she pressed the earpiece into her ear. The line clicked open with a burst of static, followed by the deep, smooth, gravelly voice she had just seen in the shadow of the window reflection.

"You played your part flawlessly, Clara," Marcus Mendoza said, his voice echoing from an untraceable, satellite-routed network. "Daniel thought he was saving a son. You thought you were saving a baby. But you were both just incubating the future of Mendoza Global. Now, it's time to bring my vessel home."
