Chapter 16: The Broken Alliance

Daniel felt his fingers go completely numb against the grip of his gun. He looked at the innocent, sleeping face of the baby, then back into Clara’s cold eyes. The woman he had crossed hell to protect, the woman he had ruined his own family for, was now threatening their child’s life just to secure her own survival.

"You won't do it," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. He didn't drop the gun. "You fought for him. In that hospital wing, your legs were brutally shattered because you threw yourself over his crib to protect him from Tomás's thugs. That wasn't an act, Clara. You love him."

Clara’s hand trembled ever so slightly, a microscopic crack in her armor. "That was simple self-preservation, Daniel. If the genetic asset dies before the activation date, my mother dies too. I am a prisoner just like him."

"But you don't have to be their slave forever," Daniel said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, lowering his weapon just enough to signal a shift. "Mariela thinks she’s the one pulling the strings here. But she hasn't seen the files I just pulled from the Geneva server. Sarah died giving me these. The Aethelgard sovereign trust isn't registered to the Mendoza estate, Mother. It’s registered exclusively under Clara’s legal maiden name. She is the sole legal owner of the bank. Not you. Not the board. You fought for a crown that belongs to her."

Mariela’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, her face contorting with a sudden, vicious panic. "What did you say? That’s impossible. I personally drafted the corporate charter!"

"They played you too, Mother," Daniel laughed, a bitter, dark, and hollow sound. "Aethelgard used your billions to fund the biological research, but they ensured the legal loophole protected their prime subject. The moment that baby is officially registered under the corporate charter in New York, Clara gains total, unilateral control of the bank. You aren't the mastermind, Mom. You’re just the delivery service."

Mariela turned sharply toward Clara, her eyes flashing with a rabid, aristocratic rage. "You deceitful little bitch..."

That single split second of maternal distraction was all the opening Daniel needed. He lunged forward across the concrete floor.
