Chapter 9: The Price of Sovereignty

The text message arrived at exactly midnight. It wasn't a text; it was a video link.
Daniel clicked it, his hands shaking. It was a live feed of their secure hotel room. The camera angle was from inside the room, looking down at the bed where Clara and Alejandro were supposed to be sleeping under heavy guard.
The bed was empty. The guards were slumped on the floor, blood pooling around their heads. A single black envelope lay on the bloody pillow.
Bring the Aethelgard encryption keys from your father's safe to the old Mendoza shipyard. Pier 4. Alone. Or the boy becomes property of the corporation.
Daniel didn't think. He didn't call the FBI. He knew the system was compromised from the top down. He grabbed the encrypted hard drive he had taken from his father's office, checked the magazine on his weapon, and drove into the pouring rain.
When he arrived at the abandoned pier, the fog was thick, swallowing the moonlight. Inside the rusted, cavernous warehouse, a single industrial spotlight illuminated two chairs. Clara was tied to one, a thick gag over her mouth, her eyes wide with animal terror, her clothes torn.
In the other chair sat an older man in a bespoke gray British suit, holding Alejandro with a terrifying, grandfatherly gentleness.
"You have your father's stubbornness, Daniel," the man said. His voice was smooth, cultured—the exact voice from the nursery monitor.

"Let them go," Daniel said, his voice cracking as he raised his gun, pointing it straight at the man's forehead. "I have the drive. I can transfer the entire asset pool to your servers right now. Just give me my son."
The man chuckled, looking down at the sleeping baby's face. "The money is irrelevant, Daniel. We can print money. We created the bank. We wanted the boy. The perfect synthesis of the Mendoza ruthlessness and the Aethelgard genetic baseline. He is not your son, Daniel. He is the first successful prototype of our future leadership."
