Chapter 23

Chapter 23: The Sovereign Fugitive

Daniel threw the door open. Standing in the pouring rain, soaking wet and bleeding from a gash across his forehead, was Tomás. He was wearing a stolen security guard uniform, his face pale and gaunt.
"How are you here?" Daniel demanded, keeping the gun leveled at Tomás’s chest. "You were sentenced to twenty years in a maximum-security federal facility."
"You think walls can hold someone when the people who built the walls want them out?" Tomás gasped, collapsing onto the living room rug. Daniel locked the door behind him, his eyes scanning the dark perimeter outside.
"They staged a transport riot three days ago," Tomás explained, coughing violently. "Aethelgard didn't want me behind bars anymore. They needed me to find you. Because I’m the only one who can bypass the biometric lock on the server that controls Clara’s fund."

Daniel knelt beside his brother, pressing the barrel of the Glock against Tomás’s jaw. "You lied to me in that note, Tomás. You told me the chip would explode. You tried to make me kill Alejandro."
Tomás let out a dry, pathetic laugh. "I didn't write that note, Daniel. Our mother did. She used my handwriting template from the corporate database. She wanted you to destroy the asset so Aethelgard would liquidate the trust, releasing her shares from the federal freeze. I came here to stop her. Because if Alejandro dies... we all die."
