Chapter 29

Chapter 29: The Fall of Babylon

The penthouse sirens began to wail as the security servers went into a terminal lockdown. Red emergency lights bathed the luxury room in a bloody hue. On the glass windows, digital tickers showed Aethelgard’s primary trading stocks plummeting into absolute zero. Decades of a shadow empire vanished in a matter of heartbeats.
Dr. Vance began to choke, her automated medical systems failing as the power grid corrupted. "Clara... secure... the master baseline..." she gasped, before her eyes rolled back and her head fell limp against the headrest.
Clara didn't look at the dying woman. She pulled a compact, silver firearm from her blazer and pointed it directly at Daniel's chest. Her hand was shaking violently.
"Give me my son, Daniel," she wept, her corporate mask completely shattering into raw, maternal desperation. "I can save him. I have a private lab in the Baltic. I have enough serum for six months. Let me save him!"
"If I give him to you, he remains a prisoner of this legacy forever, Clara," Daniel said, his back pressed against the balcony railing, the cold London wind whipping through his hair. "Come with me. We have the data now. We can force the medical community to cure him openly. No more secrets. No more Mendoza lies."

Outside, the sirens of Scotland Yard and federal tactical units began to wail in the streets below. The building was being surrounded.
Clara lowered her gun slightly, her eyes darting between Daniel, the baby, and the flashing servers. "They will never let us be free, Daniel. They are embedded in our blood."
