Chapter 20

Chapter 20: The Red Horizon

One week later. The international transit terminal of the Vancouver International Airport in Canada.
Daniel sat in a highly secluded, shadowed corner of the premium airport lounge, his heavy winter hat pulled low over his eyes. Alejandro was fast asleep in his lap, tightly wrapped in a simple, unbranded blue blanket. They were officially running out of places to hide on this continent. The vast Mendoza fortune was gone, the Aethelgard syndicate was fractured into warring factions, but the remaining shadow operatives were still actively hunting them.
He opened his encrypted phone with a thumbprint scan. The independent DNA test results he had ordered in Boston had finally finished processing through a secure, off-grid medical portal.
Daniel’s fingers shook violently as he tapped open the PDF document. His heart felt like it stopped beating inside his chest.
Paternal Match Status: Positive. 99.9% Genetic Match: Daniel Mendoza.
Tears of pure, overwhelming relief filled his eyes, blurring his vision. Alejandro was his son. Truly, biologically his. The Aethelgard file showing Tomás as the father had been a calculated lie—a false trail engineered by the corporation to keep Daniel from ever trusting his own child, to keep him from fighting for him. Clara had lied about the paternity to push him away, to make him hate her so that he would take the baby, break ties with the family, and run as far away as possible to keep the child safe from the crosshairs of the corporation. She had sacrificed everything for them.
Suddenly, a woman wearing a long tan trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat sat down in the empty terminal seat directly opposite him. She didn't look up, keeping her face completely hidden behind large, dark designer sunglasses.

It was Clara.
"He has your eyes, Daniel," she whispered, her voice cracking with an intense emotion she had suppressed for months. "I told you that once in the hospital. It was the only real truth I was ever allowed to give you."
"Clara..." Daniel reached out across the small table, but she quickly placed her gloved hand over his, stopping him.
"Don't look at me, and don't say my name. They are watching this terminal right now," she whispered urgently. "I officially traded my remaining shares and my own freedom to the surviving Aethelgard board members to buy you this specific itinerary. You and Alejandro have a direct flight to New Zealand boarding in exactly fifteen minutes. New names. New identities. A completely new life."
"Come with us," Daniel begged, his voice breaking as he gripped her hand tight. "We know the truth now. We can fight them together."
Clara slowly lifted her sunglasses just enough for him to see her eyes. They were hollow, exhausted, yet filled with a fierce, protective, and maternal fire. "You can't fight a ghost, Daniel. I am the biological key to their lock. As long as I am physically with them, they will never look for him. Go."
She stood up abruptly, turning her back to him, leaving a small, black velvet box on the table. She walked away into the heavy crowd of moving travelers, disappearing into the terminal gates without once looking back.
Daniel stared at her retreating figure, his heart tearing completely in half. He looked down at the black velvet box left on the table. With trembling fingers, he popped the latch open.
Inside lay a high-tech electronic car key fob and a small, hand-written note in Clara’s elegant cursive script.
Look at his left arm, Daniel. Deep under the skin. I didn't take the tracking microchip out. I just temporary turned it off. They will find your coordinates in exactly three days. Unless you decide to activate the other option.
Daniel frantically pulled back Alejandro’s soft sleeve. Beneath the baby's pale skin on his left forearm, a tiny, microscopic green light was pulsing rhythmically in the dark.
But beside the key fob in the box lay a second note, written in a completely different, rugged, and aggressive handwriting—his brother Tomás’s handwriting, smuggled directly out from the state prison through an unknown courier network:
She’s lying to you, big bro. She didn't save you. She just gave you the executioner's trigger. Press the panic button on that key fob, and the microchip inside the kid's arm explodes, neutralizing the genetic baseline forever. Save your own life, or save the world's future. Choose wisely.
The airport overhead intercom suddenly blared through the lounge: "Final boarding call for flight 802 with direct service to Auckland. All passengers must report to gate 14 immediately."
Daniel’s thumb hovered directly over the glowing black button of the electronic key fob. Alejandro yawned softly in his lap, his tiny, warm hand instinctively reaching up and gripping Daniel’s index finger with incredible strength.
The faint green light beneath the baby's skin blinked.
Once.
May you like
Twice.
And then turned a solid, unblinking red.
