Chapter 7: The Silent Partner

"What clinic was Tomás talking about, Clara?"

They were sitting in a secure, windowless holding room at an undisclosed hotel downtown. Alejandro was asleep in a portable bassinet between them, completely oblivious to the storm. Clara wouldn't look Daniel in the eye. She kept rubbing a small, faded, circular scar on the back of her neck—one Daniel had always assumed was a birthmark or a childhood accident.

"Before I met you, I was drowning, Daniel," Clara said softly, her voice trembling as she stared at her hands. "My mother was dying of a rare aggressive lymphoma. The hospital bills were half a million dollars. A private medical research firm approached me. They offered to pay for her experimental treatments, to give her two more years of life, if I participated in a blind genetic mapping study. It was just blood draws, Daniel. Or so I thought."

"What was the name of the firm?" Daniel’s voice was tense, urgent.

"Aethelgard Holdings," she whispered. "They had a private wing in Geneva."

Daniel pulled out his phone and speed-dialed Sarah. "Sarah, run a cross-reference on The Phoenix Directive and a company called Aethelgard Holdings. Look for overlapping assets."

Silence stretched over the speaker for a grueling two minutes, filled only by the rapid, frantic clacking of a keyboard on Sarah's end. Then, a sharp gasp.

"Daniel... Aethelgard Holdings isn't a separate company," Sarah said, her voice shaking violently. "They are the majority institutional shareholder of the global bank that funds the entire Mendoza trust. And Daniel? The registered owner of Aethelgard isn't your father, or your grandfather."

"Who is it, Sarah? Speak."

"It’s a blind trust registered under Clara’s legal maiden name. She doesn't just own a piece of the empire, Daniel. On paper... she owns all of it. Your family didn't try to ruin her because she was poor. They tried to ruin her because if she ever found out she was the landlord, the Mendozas would be on the street. And your baby inherits it all."
