Chapter 17: Shadows Over New York

A deafening gunshot echoed through the cramped basement.

Mariela had pulled a small, silver derringer pistol from her designer purse, firing wildly in a panic. The heavy caliber bullet grazed the meat of Daniel’s left shoulder, tearing through his jacket, but his sheer forward momentum carried him directly into his mother. They crashed hard against the solid concrete wall, the impact knocking the small pistol from Mariela's grip as she groaned in pain.

Clara didn't hesitate for a single second. Seeing the chaos, she gripped the baby's car seat tightly and bolted up the wooden basement stairs, slamming the door shut behind her.

"Clara! Wait!" Daniel yelled, shoving his groaning mother to the floor and scrambling up the steps, his shoulder burning with white-hot pain.

By the time he threw open the heavy basement door and burst out into the snow-covered driveway, the bright red taillights of Mariela’s black armored SUV were already disappearing down the icy mountain road. The tires kicked up a wall of white powder. Clara was gone. She had taken the baby, boarded the transport, and left him bleeding alone in the snow.

Two days later. New York City.

The financial headlines were absolutely chaotic, sending shockwaves through Wall Street: Mendoza Global Announces Sudden, Miraculous Return of Heiress Clara Mendoza. Billion-Dollar Sovereign Trust Restructured.

Daniel stood across the crowded street from the grand entrance of the Grand Plaza Hotel, his collar pulled up high against the biting winter wind, a heavy coat concealing his freshly bandaged shoulder. The entire luxury hotel was crawling with high-level corporate security teams wearing earpieces and tactical suits. Clara was inside, preparing to publicly sign the final activation documents for the Aethelgard sovereign fund. She had officially traded him for her mother’s life and ultimate global power.

But Daniel still had one final card left to play. He reached into his pocket and gripped the blood-stained flash drive Sarah had died for. It didn't just contain old medical logs; it contained the raw, unencrypted kill-switch codes for Aethelgard's entire offshore digital banking network. If he couldn't save his family, he would burn the matrix down.
