Chapter 40

Chapter 40: The Closed Matrix

Midnight. The frozen apex of the Swiss Alps.
The heavy blast doors of the Geneva facility hissed open, releasing a violent wave of pressurized air into the subterranean hangar. A sleek, radar-evading black tactical helicopter sat idling on the helipad, its carbon-fiber rotors cutting through the blinding snowstorm with a low, menacing thrum.
Clara stood on the icy tarmac, clutching Alejandro tightly in her arms. The child was wrapped in the same simple blue blanket Daniel had bought for him in Vancouver. A sleek, high-tech neural interface terminal was strapped to her wrist, its digital screen casting a cold green glow on her pale, unreadable face. She was now completely linked to the child's mind.
Daniel stood five paces away, his heavy coat billowing in the fierce downdraft of the rotors. In his right hand, he gripped the encrypted flash drive—the ultimate kill-switch that Sarah had died for. It was the only weapon left on Earth that could permanently detonate Aethelgard's global network.
"If you activate that drive, Daniel," Clara’s voice was barely audible over the roaring engines, yet it carried an icy, absolute certainty. "The global markets collapse by sunrise. The power grids in a hundred major cities will die. You won't just kill Aethelgard. You will plunge the entire world into a dark age."
"And if I don't?" Daniel yelled back, his eyes wild, tears freezing instantly on his cheeks. "We just stand by and let an immortal dictator rule the world from the body of our innocent son?!"
The child in Clara’s arms slowly turned his head to look at Daniel. His face was completely calm, devoid of any infant emotion. He didn't use the text-to-speech matrix on Clara's wrist this time. Instead, the baby slowly raised his tiny right hand, pointing his index finger directly at the flash drive in Daniel’s grip.
Instantly, the drive sparked. A white-hot, agonizing heat surged through the metal casing. Daniel cried out in pain as the localized lithium battery inside the drive was remotely hacked and overloaded through the facility's ambient wireless network. He was forced to drop it. The drive hit the frozen tarmac and melted instantly into a pool of black plastic and ruined circuits.
The last weapon was gone.
Clara stepped backward onto the boarding stairs of the helicopter, the elite tactical guards forming a human shield around her. She looked down at Daniel with a tragic, hollow finality. "We didn't lose, Daniel. We just ran out of options. The world belongs to him now. Don't follow us."
The helicopter lifted off into the blinding white storm, its sleek black chassis instantly swallowed by the dark sky, heading toward New York.
Daniel stood alone on the freezing peak, his burned, blistered palm smoking in the cold air. The wind howled around him, mocking his absolute defeat. The Mendoza empire hadn't just survived; it had evolved into something unstoppable.
He turned back toward the elevator shaft of the underground base, his mind numb. As the heavy steel doors slid shut, sealing him inside the empty facility, his personal burner phone—the one absolutely no one had the number to—vibrated violently in his pocket.
With a trembling, burned hand, Daniel pulled it out.
The screen showed an incoming, encrypted audio transmission from the departing helicopter's cockpit. He pressed it to his ear, expecting the cold, synthetic voice of his grandfather, Marcus Mendoza, mocking him from the throat of his child.

Instead, a tiny, fragile, and terrified voice echoed through the static. It wasn't translated by a computer. It was the sound of a real, helpless nine-month-old baby, crying out in genuine human agony:
"Dada... help... cold..."
Daniel’s breath hitched. His heart shattered. Alejandro was still in there. Marcus hadn't completely wiped the boy's consciousness; he was suppressing it, keeping the infant mind trapped as a prisoner inside his own body.
But before Daniel could speak, the audio feed suddenly glitched. The crying stopped instantly.
A heavy, dead silence stretched over the line for three agonizing seconds. Then, the voice changed. It became smooth, ancient, and chillingly amused. It was the unmistakable laugh of Marcus Mendoza.
"An admirable attempt, Daniel," the voice whispered through the speaker. "But you should check your other pocket before you plan your next move."
The line went dead.
Panicking, Daniel shoved his hand into the left pocket of his heavy coat—the pocket he hadn't used all night. His fingers brushed against something cold, sharp, and metallic.
He pulled it out into the dim light of the elevator.
It was a small, glass vial filled with a glowing amber fluid—the real, unmutated, final dose of the genetic stabilization serum. The one Clara claimed she had taken with her onto the helicopter.

Daniel stared at the vial in absolute horror as the elevator began to descend into the dark. If the real serum was in his pocket... what did Clara just inject into the baby on the helicopter?
And whose side was she actually on?
